Who writes the police report
Most of Nassau is covered by the Nassau County Police Department, but several villages, including Freeport, Rockville Centre, Garden City and others, have their own police departments. Knowing which agency responded tells you where to get the report and any photos or body camera footage.
Where cases are heard
Nassau County lawsuits are typically filed in Nassau County Supreme Court in Mineola rather than in Queens County. Local practice and jury pools differ, and it matters to have counsel who works in both courts.
Claims against the county, towns or villages
If a road defect, missing sign or broken signal contributed to your crash, the responsible party may be the county, a town or a village. Those claims usually require a notice of claim within 90 days under General Municipal Law § 50-e, and a lawsuit within one year and 90 days under General Municipal Law § 50-i. Many towns and villages also require prior written notice of a road defect before they can be held liable, which makes early investigation essential.
